In 2012, the İzmir Art Gallery conducted
workshops for primary school children, as it
did last year, seeking to familiarize children
with art and artistic expression, and to
foster an appreciation for art in the younger
generation.
İŞBANK ART COLLECTION
CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION
Established at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts
University (MSGSU) with the support
of İşbank, Turkey’s first science-based
Artwork Conservation and Restoration
Laboratory was opened on 14 March 2012;
the Laboratory is intended to protect the
priceless legacy of paintings in our country,
and to ensure that this legacy is handed
down to future generations.
With foundations laid by İşbank in the
1940s, and covering more than 2,000 works
of art, Turkey’s most comprehensive private
collection of paintings, includes works by
numerous eminent artists ranging from
Osman Hamdi Bey, the founder of MSGSU, to
Şeker Ahmet Paşa, and from Hoca Ali Rıza to
İbrahim Çallı.
Preserved in a dedicated climate-controlled
section in the Headquarters building, the
artworks have been examined by MSGSU
experts; restoration work was begun upon
the opening of the Artwork Conservation
and Restoration Laboratory. Within the
scope of this project, an undergraduate
program in artwork conservation and
restoration has been set up at MSGSU to
train individuals for such work. The program
will admit its first students in the year to
come.
ENVIRONMENT-RELATED
ACTIVITIES
81 FORESTS IN 81 CITIES
To protect the environment and to increase
environmental awareness within society
and particularly among children, İşbank, in
collaboration with the TEMA Foundation
and the Ministry of Forestry and Water
Affairs, launched the “81 Forests in 81 Cities”
project.
The planting phase of the project was
finalized in 2012 at a ceremony held in
Trabzon; to date, 2,205 thousand saplings
have been planted on a total area of 1,500
hectares and are being cared for periodically.
The project is set apart from its peers
primarily by its ongoing provision for the
care and maintenance of these forested
areas for five years after the initial planting.
Saplings that fail to take root, or are too dry,
are replaced with new plantings to achieve
higher rates of forested area sustainability.
As of year-end 2012, the rate of successful
plantings stood at 78%.
The “81 Forests in 81 Cities” project
contributes to the protection of the land in
our country through planting and through
terracing efforts. Land formation in Turkey
is such that nearly 90% of its terrestrial
surface is subject to erosion, and 63%
to severe erosion. One of the oldest and
most effective ways of combating erosion
is terracing. In recognition of this ancient
method, 1,296 kilometers of terracing have
also been achieved under the project.
