81 STUDENTS FROM 81 CITIES
In 2008, İşbank, in cooperation with the
Darüşşafaka Society, initiated one of the
most long-lasting and highest added-value
social responsibility projects ever conducted
in the field of education in Turkey; the
visionary project is called “81 Children from
81 Cities”.
The Darüşşafaka Society provides education
to fatherless and/or motherless children
who are in financial need. Pupils are
admitted to this all-expenses-paid boarding
school beginning in the fourth grade and
attend until completion of the senior year in
high school. The Darüşşafaka School aims to
provide a quality education, social progress,
and a warm, supportive environment to
students. Under the “81 Students From 81
Cities” project, each year İşbank pays the
educational expenses of 81 children from 81
cities who successfully pass the entrance
exam. The Bank intends to continue
supporting these students through their
university education.
The first students who admitted to the
program in the 2008-2009 academic year as
4th grade students in Darüşşafaka School,
are expected to graduate from university in
the 14th year of the project. It is projected
İşbank will have supported more than one
thousand students by that time.
In the 2012-2013 academic year, a total of
395 students are pursuing their education
at Darüşşafaka under the support of the “81
Students From 81 Cities” project.
İşbank provides students with much more
than just financial aid, contributing to their
social development through a variety of
activities.
“ONE MILLION BOOKS, ONE MILLION
CHILDREN” CAMPAIGN
As the 2007-2008 academic year drew to
a close, İşbank launched one of the most
comprehensive reading-related campaigns
ever undertaken in Turkey. Dubbed “One
Million Books, One Million Children”, the
goals of this campaign are to support the
children’s cognitive and cultural abilities and
contribute to raising a generation that reads
and queries.
Under the campaign, one million primary
school students who show their report
card in any İşbank branch in Turkey or TRNC
get a free book. In 2008, children received
a copy of “Alice in Wonderland.” In 2009,
children received “Yazarlarımızdan Masallar
ve Öyküler,” a selection of tales and short
stories by Turkish authors; “Yazarlarımızdan
Öyküler,” another collection of short stories
in 2010; “Halime Kaptan,” a novel by Rıfat
Ilgaz, and “Küçük Mavi Gezegen” (“The
Little Blue Planet”) in 2011; and in 2012,
“Sait Faik’ten Çocuklara Hikayeler,” (“Stories
for the Children by Sait Faik”). Books were
also sent to Germany for distribution from
İşbank Germany branches. Inclusive of the
2012 campaign, six million books have been
distributed to primary school students over
the last five years.
