For 88 years, İşbank has continuously taken
on a pioneering role in the advancement of
social life, as well as economic development,
supporting projects with strength drawn
from its founding mission. Holding a deep-
seated sense of social responsibility, the
Bank undertakes its activities in the social
responsibility area through an enduring,
far-reaching structure that is integrated and
sustainable in line with the current needs of
our country and its people and communities.
İşbank’s social responsibility mission is to
contribute to social progress through social
responsibility activities structured in a
long-lasting, far-reaching and sustainable
framework.
EDUCATION-RELATED
ACTIVITIES
CHESS
Until the 2000s, chess was not widespread
in Turkey and Turkish players had yet to
achieve international recognition. With the
aim of transforming chess into a popular
mass sport practiced across the country,
in December 2005 İşbank launched a
collaboration with the Turkish Chess
Federation and became one of the game’s
primary supporters on a national scale.
Since the onset of İşbank’s sponsorship of
the sport:
• The number of officially licensed chess
players increased to 230,000 from 30,000
• The number of students taking chess as
an elective course at school increased to
2,500,000 from 100,000
• The number of medals won in
international competitions reached 188.
Projects in line with chess sponsorship
moved forward and the following activities
were carried out in 2012.
Introduction of İşbank Chess Classes in
Primary Schools
Chess classes have been introduced in
primary schools as a method to show
that chess is an easily accessible sport;
encouraging schoolchildren to play chess,
focusing the attention of teachers and
parents on the sport, and addressing
insufficient resources at schools with limited
financial means.
Growing public awareness of the
cooperation between İşbank and the Turkish
Chess Federation spurred an increase in
demand for chess classes in schools. In 2012,
1,519 chess classes were launched, 400
chess classrooms were renewed, and the
number of chess classes in schools reached
7,073 in total.
